Cold chain explained: how your weight loss medication is delivered and stored

Your weight loss medication is shipped with wool insulation and ice packs to keep it cool throughout transit. Even after the ice packs have melted, the wool packaging holds a cooler temperature for longer. Mounjaro pens are stable out of the fridge for up to 30 days after first use, and Wegovy for up to 6 weeks. Once you receive it, store it in the fridge.

Who this applies to

This article applies to patients receiving weight loss injections (such as Mounjaro and Wegovy 7.2mg single dose device) by post from us. For other medications, check the patient leaflet for specific storage rules.

How we keep your delivery cool in transit

• Each parcel includes wool insulation around the medication.
• Ice packs are included to keep the temperature low at the start of transit.
• The packaging is designed for a 2-day delivery window and generally keeps the contents cooler for longer than that.

Even if the ice packs have melted by the time your parcel arrives, the wool packaging will have kept the contents at a lower temperature than the surrounding air.

If your parcel feels warm on arrival

Put it in the fridge as soon as you can.

Storing your medication at home

The fridge is the preferred location for unused pens. This keeps them at the most stable temperature and extends their usable life.

Because the Mounjaro pens are stable out of the fridge for up to 30 days after first use and up to 6 weeks for Wegovy, you can take a pen with you when you travel as long as the total time out of the fridge stays within that window. If your fridge is out of action for a short time, the medication is unaffected within that window.

Common scenarios

• Your parcel arrives on day 2 and the ice packs have melted. The medication is still fine; put it in the fridge.
• You are away when delivery is attempted and the parcel sits for an extra day. As long as the total time is within the stability window, it is fine.
• You are going on holiday for two weeks and want to take a pen with you. As long as the total time out of the fridge is under 30 days (for Mounjaro) or 6 weeks (for Wegovy), this is fine.
• Your fridge has stopped working for a few hours. The medication is unaffected.

What to do next
