Needles, sharps disposal and what is included with your weight loss injection order

Each weight loss injection order includes 5 needles (4 for your doses and 1 spare) (except Wegovy 7.2mg single dose device) and alcohol wipes. A sharps box is sent with your first order only; you can order a replacement from the website when needed. This article also covers how to fit a used needle into the smaller sharps box.

This article applies to patients ordering weight loss injections from us, including Mounjaro and Wegovy. It covers what arrives in the box and how to dispose of used needles safely.

What is included with your order

• 5 needles per pack: 4 for your weekly doses and 1 spare. We include a spare because the needle type is specific to the pen and not easily replaced from a high-street pharmacy.
• Alcohol wipes.
• A sharps box with your first order only. If yours is full or locked and you need to buy a new one, you can order a replacement from the website.
• Wool packaging and ice packs to keep the medication cool in transit (for Mounjaro and Wegovy 7.2mg single dose device only).

If you would like more alcohol wipes than the pack includes, any generic alcohol wipe from your local supermarket or pharmacy works fine.

How to put a used needle into a small sharps box

The clear outer cap on the needle does not fit through the opening of the sharps boxes, but the needle itself does. To dispose of a used needle safely:

1. While the needle is still on the pen, put the small green cap back onto the needle (the inner cap, not the clear outer one).
2. Leave the clear outer cap off.
3. With the green cap on, unscrew the needle from the pen.
4. Place the needle into the sharps box with the green cap pointing upwards. This stops your fingers from being pricked when you lower it in.
5. With the green cap facing up, the needle slides through the opening of the smaller boxes without issue.

The clear outer cap that is left over is just plastic and can be disposed of with regular household waste.

If your sharps box is full or locked

You only receive a sharps box with your first order. Once it is full or locked, you will need to dispose of it at your local pharmacy. Order a new sharps box from the product page on oxfordonlinepharmacy.co.uk before your next injection is due, so you have one ready when you need it.

Common scenarios

• You have just opened your first order. The alcohol wipes are inside the pack along with your needles. If you would like more, any generic alcohol wipe from a supermarket or pharmacy works fine.
• Your sharps box is full or locked. Dispose of it at your local pharmacy, and order a new one from our website before your next injection.

What to do next

If you have just received your order, set aside the spare needle and the sharps box. If your sharps box is approaching full, order a new one from the website in good time. If you are unsure whether disposal in your area has any specific rules, check with your local council.
